I enjoy writing short fiction as much as I enjoy writing novels. I find that conceptualizing and writing short stories exercises a different set of creative muscles than the longer-form fiction. My two previous collections – Signs of Passing and This is the Dream – have each featured a mix of short stories and novellas all very loosely connected around common characters or themes. Writing and researching large novels can take a long time and, at least for me, requires setting the project aside from time to time so that I can get some distance and a better perspective of the larger work; a kind of stepping back from the easel. During those periods, I often turn to short fiction so I can change up my focus and keep writing. I hope the stories in this third collection will prove to be as enjoyable to read as they have been to write.
